Notes: Disturbed some flagstones while working in garden, lots and lots of winged ants. Smaller than Queens, so assume these are the males getting ready for flight. I know from a couple of years ago this location had a nest that went 18" deep and had an area 36" x 24" as I had to removethe flagstones, recompress the ground and relay the stones as much of the stones were sinking and the tunnelling of the ants was the cause. This was a huge nest back then, and it looks as if its still a successful nest. |

Notes: Collected 9 walking wingless Queens. Had seen earlier in the evening the flights, about 1700hrs,but didn't notice the walking wingless Queens till about 2130hrs. Took a photo of humidity and the temperature has ranged from 28-33°C today, cooling off in the evening to about 22°C that it is now. RH% is 55% and the air pressure is 1022mb now. Pollen is very high. But I guess check the weather for Portsmouth UK and you can discover the factors that matter. There weren't as many fliers as I've seen in past years, but I consider this a very early flight. most likely niger but an accurate ID is impossible with the provided images |
